1 in 5 American families are currently taking care of an aging loved one. Being a family caregiver can be physically and emotionally challenging especially without resources, guidance, and support. Matthews Free Family Caregiver Seminars provide families with demonstration and hands on training in providing assistance with activities of daily living, discussions on the mental and emotional needs of an aging loved one, and tips on providing a safe and nurturing environment.
Dealing with Dementia and Alzheimer’s can be difficult. Matthews Dementia and Alzheimer’s Training Courses provide professional and family caregivers with strategies and tactics to utilize when working with an individual with memory loss. Caregivers will gain a deeper understanding for what the individual they are caring for is going through and are enlightened by education and group discussion.
Matthews Fall Prevention Training Courses teach professional and family caregivers proper techniques to use in assisting with transfers, fall hazards to be aware of around the house, and the signs, symptoms and characteristics that are red flags for an individual who may be at risk of a fall.
Cardiac events and issues are the leading cause for hospitalization in the United States. Matthews Cardiac Prevention and Care Training Courses are geared towards teaching professional and family caregivers to recognize the signs and symptoms of Cardiac events and issues, ways to prevent or minimize symptoms, and the appropriate time to seek care from a medical professional.
In accordance with the Illinois Department of Public Health, Administrative Code 245.70, this training is provided on an initial and annual basis. The student receives a certificate of completion at the end of training, and is eligible to work at any Illinois home health agency in a non-medical capacity. The certificate is valid for one year. The topics covered include those mandated by the State of Illinois as well as an emphasis on practicing and performing a return demonstration of the tasks they will need to perform for clients.
Upon completion registrants will be certified for CPR with the American Heart Association. A CPR card will be provided upon completion of the class. This certification is valid for 2 years.

PREREQUISITE: Must have CPR certification and Basic ECG prior to taking this course. This class is targeting healthcare professionals (nurses, paramedics, doctors). Registrants will sharpen their skills in the following areas: CPR, respiratory arrest, AED, pacemaker, defibrillator, megacode practice and skills testing, acute coronary syndromes and stroke. This course follows the American Heart Association guidelines. A certification of completion with 8 contact hours will be provided upon completion of the class. This certification is valid for 2 years.
